"A man's heart is his own Neter."

-Egyptian Proverb

In ancient Egypt, the heart was considered to be part of the soul and was not removed during mummification.  Instead, it remained intact and in many cases it was even protected by an amulet.  Upon death, the deceased is tested before entering the afterlife in a ceremony called the weighing of the heart.  The Goddess Ma'at, represented by a single feather, is the symbol of balance and justice.  During the ceremony, the feather of Ma'at is weighed against the human heart.  If the heart is light as a feather, the deceased enters the afterlife peacefully.  If the heart outweighs the feather, the heart is devoured by a beast and the deceased is forced into the underworld.
